Q: DO I NEED ASA 101 CERTIFICATION TO SIGN UP?
A: Not necessarily! If you have taken a sailing class in the past or have relevant sailing experience please contact us about testing out or using your equivalent certification.
Q: IF I ALREADY HAVE MY ASA 104 IS THIS STILL A WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE?
A: Learning seamanship is a lifelong quest. We guarantee that this will be an amazing journey even for experienced and certified sailors. Our captain instructors share their wealth of knowledge and every course is different with unique opportunities for learning. Reinforce the skills you have and gain new expertise with Passage Offshore. If you don’t need the certification we will waive the certification fee and you’ll get a $390 discount on the journey.
Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
A: All of the necessary navigation equipment will be on board for your use. Our packing list for Passage Offshore is very similar to other Sailing Collective voyages (pretty easy), with the exception of a few additional items.
Full set of rain gear that is appropriate for the climate of your voyage location.
Non-slip deck shoes or boots that are appropriate for all-weather sailing.

Q: IS THERE A CHEF?
A: No, and that’s a good thing! Part of learning to voyage is learning to eat well on a boat. We will empower you with the skills to make that happen.
Q: DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO COOK?
A: Your instructor will be teaching galley cooking skills as part of the course and the group provisioning and meal plan is guided by our culinary director. For those who love to cook, you will have plenty of opportunities to share your skills! For those who are here to learn in the galley, we have you covered.
Q: WILL THERE BE LEISURE TIME TO RELAX DURING THE COURSE?
A: Absolutely. It’s important that we never lose sight of WHY we sail. Having time to enjoy the sights, sounds, and culture of the itinerary is forever important to us. Learning to sail with Passage Offshore means that you learn the Sailing Collective way, which is all about chilling when the time is right for it.
Q: WHAT IS THE POLICY ON ALCOHOL?
A: Students are responsible for operating the boat on this voyage. Drinks can be had at the end of the day when the boat is safe in harbor for the night. We will be teaching prudent seamanship and making responsible decisions 24 hours a day so don’t expect any huge party nights.
Q. HOW MANY STUDENTS?

Q: WHAT IF I AM BOOKING A CABIN FOR TWO PEOPLE BUT WE WANT TO PAY SEPARATELY?
A: We can only process 1 credit card at a time and recommend using a payment share app such as Venmo for reimbursement. Private invoices can be emailed upon request.
Q: CAN I BREAK UP THE PAYMENTS FOR MY JOURNEY?
A: We require a 50% deposit to reserve your cabin with your final balance due 90 days prior to departure. We can break up your payment into thirds under special circumstances and by special request. Please inquire privately for more details. Please review the “CANCELLATIONS, INSURANCE, AND CONDUCT” tab before booking.
Q: WILL I BE ABLE TO CHARGE MY ELECTRONICS?
A: Yes. The boats will have a small (100W 120V AC) inverter for you to plug in and charge battery powered electronics.
Q: WHAT IS THE DEMOGRAPHIC ON A TYPICAL JOURNEY?
A: The average age ranges from mid 20s to mid 50s and the Sailing Collective welcomes travelers of any age seeking adventure and exploration. Sailing Collective passengers range from artists to astrophysicists and tend to be adventurous with an interest in exploration and trying new things.
Q: ARE THERE ANY HEALTH REQUIREMENTS?
A: Before traveling, you should always ensure that you are in good health. Passengers should be physically able to climb ladders and board and off the boat into a dinghy and on to docks. You are required to inform the Sailing Collective ahead of time of any medical conditions to ensure that a journey at sea is right for you and your safety and the safety of other passengers. Q: WHAT IF I AM PRONE TO SEASICKNESS?
A: There are a variety of seasickness and nausea medications available over the counter and by prescription. Please research your options before you travel and if you decide medication is right for you, please bring a supply of the necessary medication. Your captain has many tricks to minimize the likelihood seasickness.
Q: HOW DO WE FIND THE INSTRUCTOR WHEN WE GET TO THE MARINA LOCATION?
A: We put you in contact with your crew and send a welcome packet with all details in advance of your departure. If you have any questions about your journey, planning travel, etc. please email or call your Sailing Collective contact ahead of time.
Q: WHAT ARE THE EXTRA COSTS?
A: Travel to and from the sailing trip is not included, we recommend searching flights before you book your journey so that you are taking into account all transportation costs. While on the trip passengers are responsible for activities and meals ashore. On board you are responsible for purchasing your own alcohol and soft drinks, as well as any specific dietary provisions that were not pre-arranged with the Chef.
Q: HOW MUCH SHOULD I BE PREPARED TO SPEND DURING A JOURNEY?
A: We recommend bringing between $300 - $600 per person (varies based on location) to cover additional taxi and travel, gifts, and on shore activities such as dining and evening activities.
Q: WHAT IS CUSTOMARY TIPPING FOR INSTRUCTOR?
A: Your crew works hard so you can play even harder - show them some love! It is customary in the industry to tip the crew 10% to 20%. Crew members split the tips evenly.

Q: WHAT ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE?
A: We recommend travel insurance through Global Rescue. In the unlikely event that you must use your travel insurance, we will comply with your request for any documentation or information the insurance company needs.
